Born near Sacramento, California, Mandisa grew up singing in church. Her talent was recognized nationwide when she competed on season 5 of “American Idol” in 2006. Despite finishing ninth, host Ryan Seacrest acknowledged her as “a great spirit on the show”.

After “American Idol”, Mandisa released her debut album “True Beauty” in 2007, which received a Grammy nomination for best pop and contemporary gospel album. She went on to release five more albums, including a Christmas album.

On October 7, 2014, at the Dove Awards in Nashville, Tennessee, Mandisa’s fifth album “Overcomer” won the award for pop/contemporary album of the year. This album not only won her a Dove Award but also a Grammy for best contemporary Christian music album.
